Today is Annual Coastal Clean Up day across the world.
My friend Ashley and I had some early morning coffee and headed to the beach to help out. This was the first time I'd done this, but she's a seasoned veteran at the clean ups.
We were each given a bag and a pair of blue gloves, then set free to clean up the beach.
I could NOT believe how many cigarette butts we found. All I can say is I stopped counting once I hit 450! Between the two of us we had way over 1,000 butts picked up. YUCK!!
That's 50 packs of cigarettes! (according to Google)
We also found lots of straws, bottle caps, string/rope, plastic pieces, twist ties and a line and hook setup from a fisherman. While out cleaning up, we passed a number of families with small children who were playing in the sand. It's pretty unsanitary, all that trash is in the sand they're playing in.
Needless to say, I'm glad we were able to put in a few hours and help out a little bit. Thank you to the volunteers who coordinated this event and all of the others who came out to clean up.
Please only leave your footprints at our beaches.
